DOHA RONAUTICA Middle East and the marina of Porto Arabia will host the second annual Bayliner Day at the Pearl-Qatar on Friday.

The event will bring together boating enthusiasts, allowing Bayliner boat owners an opportunity to meet each other and participate in a variety of activities.

Beyond that, it will give the public the rare opportunity to view a gathering of Bayliner crafts up close.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Attendance at the Michigan City In-Water Boat Show, which ended Sunday, was up 7 percent as compared to 2007, and dealers reported that sales were good, organizers reported in a report earlier this week.

“We had perfect weather during the setup week and I think that put everyone in a good mood,” said Show Manager Ken Alvey. “By the time the show opened, the exhibitors were upbeat and ready to sell boats. It is essential these days to have a positive attitude in order to get visitors into a buying state of mind.”

All residents of LaPorte County, Ind. – which contains Michigan City – were allowed into the show for free on opening day, Aug. 21. In addition, the newly-acquired Water Weenie hot dog boat was launched at the show with Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie, and the Michigan City Port Authority building was renamed in posthumous honor of Hartley Job, organizers stated.

Job was the principle founder of the port authority and was instrumental in convincing the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association to organize the first Michigan City In-Water Boat Show in 1980, according to the association.

Enter the main salon via aft sliding door. The salon is very open and bright. A very comfortable salon/galley. To starboard aft is the wet bar with NuTone blender and U-line icemaker. Bayliner Boats - SW Florida prepares for Tropical Storm Fay

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Fay is expected to come ashore close to Naples, Fla., at near-hurricane strength this morning and parts of South Florida could end up with 10 inches of rain, the Miami Herald reported in a story today.
Fay posed a potential double whammy of intense rain and a tidal surge to flood-susceptible Southwest Florida, where rain is a bigger threat than wind. The center of Tropical Storm Fay crossed Key West Monday evening, downing only a few tree limbs and power lines and causing isolated flooding.
Sustained winds neared 60 mph for much of the day, with a 71-mph gust recorded at Sand Key, about eight miles south of Key West, the newspaper reported.
National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read said Fay's failure to intensify before reaching the Keys helped Florida “dodge a bullet.” Southwest Florida may not be so fortunate, however.

If Fay hits at the right spot and time and tide, it could potentially drive inland a wall of water up to eight feet high, hurricane surge models predicted. Just about anywhere the storm makes landfall along the Gulf Coast could wind up awash in seawater, according to the newspaper.

''It's one of the most vulnerable coastlines in the entire United States for storm surge,'' Stephen Baig, a longtime National Hurricane Center surge expert who retired three weeks ago, told the Herald.

Marinas prepare
Preparations at marinas that potentially could be impacted by Fay were already well underway as the storm drew near. Cape Coral Yacht Basin in Cape Coral, Fla., sent out notices on Sunday for people to secure their boats.

“Everybody has complied,” assistant harbormaster Gary Wandrey told the Ft. Myers News-Press in a story on its Web site this morning. “We’re in good shape. People came in and took care of it.”

At Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort & Marina on Captiva, Fla., people started taking boats out of the water Sunday, the newspaper reported.

Four Winds Marina in Bokeelia, Fla., has wet slips and dry storage, and employees as well as customers have been getting ready for Fay for three days.

“A lot of our customers live on the outer islands like Useppa and Upper Captiva, so a lot have gone out to secure their homes and then bring their boats back and put them in dry storage,” general manager Janette Healy told the newspaper.

Although gas prices have gone down a bit in the past couple weeks, they have still risen greatly in the past year. But, the passion to wake board hasn’t left, and unfortunately that means that we still need to fuel our boats! So, that got us thinking here at wake board stuff, what goes into purchasing a boat? What are the most fuel-efficient boats? How does a first-timer go about purchasing a boat, what are they looking for? Well, we did some research, and you’ll love the information we’ve come up with. It’s our very own beginners boat-buying guide! Over the next week, we will be presenting our guidelines for buying a boat, and our reviews of various different boats, so stay tuned!

There are so many things to consider when buying a boat: insurance, brand, warranty, maintenance, and of course, how much it will all cost. Well, the average boater boats 75 hours/season, and 95% of boats are less than 26 feet, which does not have much of an effect on the cost of fuel. 64% of those buyers purchase less than 50 gallons of gas per season, that’s the equivalent of 2 trips to the gas station for an SUV. So, for a $500,000 large boat that uses 100 gallons in gas per weekend, if there were a $.50 increase in gas, it would result in an increase of $50 over the weekend. Whereas, a smaller boat, that only require 20 gallons a weekend will result in a $10 increase over the weekend.

That being said, now its time to figure out which boat is the right boat for you! There are so many to choose from, over 7 different brands, all with different models, features, and prices.

1. Well, one of the first questions you have to ask yourself is how often am I going to be boarding (realistically), and how experienced am I? If you are a beginner, and do not plan on boarding enormous amounts of hours for awhile, then a used or pre-owned boat may be the best way to go. If you have your heart set on a new boat, but you are a beginner, you want to make sure that you get a boat that does not create a large wake, instead get one that creates a small to medium wake, allowing yourself to increase your experience before you move on to bigger wakes.

2. Now, what is the difference between all these boats? You have inboard boats, all purpose fishing boats, bow riders, closed bow runabouts, cuddy cabins, deck boats, jet boats, pontoon boats… what do they all mean, and what is right for you? Well, for wake boarding, any of the above can work, but the best type is an inboard boat. An inboard boat has a “v-drive” engine, which is placed in the rear of the boat, near the transom. This placement allows for larger wakes. There are also ballast tanks that help weigh the boat down (generally, they can be automatically filled or emptied to regulate the weight). Most boats also have something known as a wedge, a piece of metal that I behind the propeller, and helps to shape the wake.

3. Now, there are other things to consider, other than just the boat and operating costs. Maintenance can get pricey if your boat is not well taken care of. A freshwater wash down after each use, and keeping your boat covered between uses can go a long way in the life of your boat. There are routine maintenance costs, like with most big purchases, like oil changes and winterizing.

4. Next, is where you are going to keep your boat. You can’t store it in your driveway with your car, so what is the cost of storing your boat? Well, the cheapest solution is to keep the boat on a trailer on your property. But, you can also use rack storage which keeps your boat in a covered shed. And, for those who want convenience or have larger boats, a marina slip, though a bit pricier is the way to go.

5. You also have to take into consideration insurance prices, which varies depending on the length and type, cost of the boat, and the level of coverage you are looking for. Before purchasing a boat be sure to contact your insurance agent and get quotes for insuring various boats before you make a final decision. You can always reduce your insurance cost by taking a boater’s education course too!

6. The best information you can get is from people who own or have owned boats, and can give you first hand experience, ask around, and find out what brands they liked and didn’t like. Then, go to various boat shows and dealers and talk to people about what you’re looking for and what their boats have to offer. Always make sure to test-drive the boat (yes, believe it or not you can actually do that!). Bayliner Boats - Short's Marine purchases nearby Full Tilt Marine

After 18 years of service to the Long Neck area, David and Kathy Ritter, owners of Full Tilt Marine in Long Neck, have sold their business to neighboring Short’s Marine. The acquisition was completed Friday, Aug. 1, roughly a month after negotiations commenced between the two parties.
Donald Short, proprietor of Short’s Marine, said the deal is part of an expansion project designed to benefit his company and the local boating community. He explained that adding a well-known, reliable business like Full Tilt will allow the watercraft and motor provider to offer greater accessibility to parts and boat maintenance, as well as provide customers with a shared experience of more than 75 years in the industry.

“Full Tilt has always been a very viable and successful business,” said Short.

“What we want to do is combine the best parts of both operations to create a better boating experience for everyone.”

The main office of Short’s Marine in Long Neck currently includes a 30,000-square-foot showroom with everything from parts and accessories to full lines of Bayliner, Azure, Maxum, Bennington and Trophy boats. Acquiring Full Tilt Marine has added a 4-acre facility with a 7,300-square-foot showroom and two large service facilities. Short will continue to supply the signature Full Tilt product lines found at the new location, including Tahoe pontoons, Carolina skiff boats, Honda and Yamaha outboards and Mercury engines.

While Full Tilt patrons may see the addition of Short’s Marine products at the location in coming months, they should not expect to see big differences in pricing or service operations, said Short. “For most of the customers, it will be business as usual,” he said. “We want to make this a very seamless change so as as not to disturb [Full Tilt’s] customer base.”

The extra space now available to Short’s will also allow the business to consolidate various operations - including its canvas division and boat storage - into one central location, he said.

Although Full Tilt was Short’s Marine’s largest competitor in the area, Short claims the move was not done as a result of market pressure or to monopolize the Long Neck boating industry. The Ritters were simply ready for a change, said Short, who said the friendly transaction was mutually beneficial to both groups.

After almost two decades of being in business, the Ritters said they were happy to serve the Long Neck area, where the marina was well known for its fast and efficient work. They said that when their company started, it was a service and maintenance provider that operated out of the back of the family truck. Through hard work and with support from the community, Full Tilt developed into a well-known venue that served the entire spectrum of boater needs, said David Ritter.

“Not a lot of people know that I actually started out working in Short’s Marine 19 years ago,” he said. “We have come a long way and now is a good time for us to retire.”

The Ritters said reaching out to the community held a top priority for them. The business donated three 24-foot pontoon boats to Camp Arrowhead, did service work for the Center for the Inland Bays and often gave discounted maintenance to many coastal outreach and environmental programs. “One of the greatest things is that we have been able to meet so many people through our business,” said Ritter. “We thank everyone for their support in past years.”

The sessions earned great support from the marine industry in those regions.
Dealers from Eastern Canada had expressed interest in attending these courses, but with the distance, the cost of travel and the time commitment involved, many could not attend. The NMEA has listened to those concerns and is pleased to offer the courses in Halifax.

Bayliner Boats - Crate’s Marine Used Boat Auction Extended

Due to both the volume of business and the time lost due to rain, Crates Marine Sales in Keswick is extending their usual two-day used boat auction to a third day, next Sunday, August 17th.
Boating Industry Canada was on-site and interviewed Jim Pollock of Premiere Event Management, the auctioneers hired by Crate’s to do the auction.

“This event was very successful last year and this year we have 189 Lots to go on the block. There are almost 170 boats from Sea-Doos to cruisers up to 52 feet. The rain is really cutting into the event, so we have had to continue this August 17th.

We just can’t get through it all this weekend,” Jim told Boating Industry Canada.
Although there are some older boats on the Auction Sale List, there are plenty of late-model boats to choose from.

Across Canada children of marine dealership employees were eligible to apply. With David Brett as part of our team here at Bay Port, William applied for this scholarship to aid with his upcoming studies in Visual & Creative Arts Advanced.

Due to his outstanding academic records, and leadership abilities demonstrated by extracurricular activities, William was picked out of the many applicants to receive this scholarship.

Bayliner Boats - $10,000 Discover Boating Contest Winners

Novice boating enthusiasts Debbie and Joey Keller of Richmond Hill, ON visited DiscoverBoating.ca last winter to educate themselves on getting started in boating before visiting the 2008 Toronto International Boat Show.
After their research on the website, the Kellers visited the Show and walked away owners of a new boat – plus an unexpected reward.
Upon purchasing their new boat, the Kellers entered the 2008 Show’s Buy a Boat and Win contest. Soon after, the couple received a call from the Show stating they were recipients of a $10,000 cheque, courtesy of Skippers Plan, Robertson & Robertson Insurance. Slow boating industry leads to layoffs at Four Winns

CADILLAC - Tough economic times are hitting the boating industry hard.
In Cadillac, tough times led Four Winns to layoff a portion its workforce last week. Four Winns President Jeff Olson said Monday he didn’t have specific numbers but layoffs were across the board. The hope is to bring people back in a few weeks, he said.

"We’re trying to develop some sort of backlog so we can bring these people back," Olson said.

What’s hitting Four Winns now has been hitting the boating industry since last fall. Olson calls it the perfect storm of home mortgage problems in the U.S. because people often finance boats through a second mortgage loan, fuel prices and a "general malaise" among consumers.

"Everyone wants to feel down about something," Olson said.

In the last 90 days - and about the time gas hit $4 per gallon - Olson said retail sales fell off. At Four Winns boat show in Cadillac recently, the turnout wasn’t as great as it had been in previous years, partly prompted by bad weather, Olson said.

As an example of what’s happened elsewhere in the industry, Brunswick has announced plans to reduce its cost structure by $300 million. The move means permanent layoffs and factory closings at Brunswick. Suppliers too, like engine companies, are facing the same downturn in the market, ¨ Olson said.

"We’ve fortunately been able to dodge the bullet a little longer," Olson said. "We have a lot of new product where other people didn’t invest in new product."

Lines are still running for the Wellcraft boats and Four Winns’ 45-foot model.

The company is working to strengthen its Wellcraft lines while continuing an emphasis on a strong international market as dealers across the globe are re-stocking with new model year boats, Olson said.

Bayliner Boats - Mercury cuts and temporary shutdown

The company, one of Fond du Lac's largest employers, eliminated some 62 salaried positions in several areas throughout its United States operations, including sales, marketing, information technology, facilities and human resources departments.
A majority of the reductions came from Mercury Marine headquarters in Fond du Lac or Mercury MerCruiser in Stillwater, Okla., said company spokesperson Steve Fleming.
"Mercury is providing generous separation packages, including severance and benefits, in accordance with company policy, as employees transition from the company," he said. "Additionally, Mercury is providing outplacement services to assist employees as they seek employment."
Mercury has made cuts to its work force several times since the beginning of the year. Sinking boat sales and a slumping economy have the company looking to cut costs, Fleming said. More layoffs could be ahead. Just how many, Fleming said he didn't know.
"There will be a continuous evaluation of our business," he said.
Brunswick Corp., Mercury Marine's parent company, announced plans to eliminate as many as 2,700 jobs from its marine division last month. Those cuts are not expected to affect Mercury Marine.
In addition to the layoffs, Mercury Marine is closing production facilities for three weeks starting Aug. 28 to balance output. Two of those weeks had been expected, a third was added, Fleming said. Bayliner Boats - Campion Boats Launches First Test with Ashland Inc.

Two high-performance pleasure craft from Campion Boats, showcasing a new use for Ashland’s ENVIREZ® bio-based resin technology, were recently tested on open water.

ENVIREZ resin, a major component of the boats’ construction, is from Ashland Composite Polymers, a business group of Ashland Performance Materials, a division of Ashland Inc.

The two boats, Campion’s Chase1 550 and 600, were made using ENVIREZ L 86300 T-25 bio-based resin in their hulls, liners and decks.

The resin, which is undergoing a final evaluation for this use, is designed to provide high elongation and toughness properties that deliver the impact and crack-resistant attributes desired by the marine industry. In addition to using ENVIREZ resin, Campion Boats also used Ashland’s LE series white gelcoat (WG-LE-2644) and the MP-series gelcoat for colors.

The Olympic Boat Centers, whose slogan is "We’ll make a boat nut out of you!" has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in a court in the Central District of California this week.The company, headquartered in Redmond, has 21 West Coast locations from British Columbia to San Diego. According to court documents, it owes as much as $100 million to its creditors.

World's largest seller of Bayliners, Meridians, Trophy Boats

The company has been in business for more than 50 years, and its Web site says that it's the world's largest seller of Bayliners, Meridians, Trophy Boats and others. Many of those boating big-names, as well as hundreds of other companies and individuals, are listed as creditors to whom Olympic Boat Centers owes the money, the documents state.

Brunswick, the parent company of Bayliner boats confirms filing

One of the creditors is Brunswick, the parent company of Bayliner boats, made in Arlington, Wash. A Brunswick company representative confirmed the filing and said it's not expected to affect jobs at the Arlington location. Moody's Investors Service said recently it has downgraded the long-term debt of recreational equipment maker Brunswick Corp. on concerns for the health of the U.S. marine industry.

Brunswick's performance is not expected to improve

Moody's cut the company's ratings from Baa2 to Baa3, the agency's lowest investment-grade designation. Brunswick's performance is not expected to significantly improve in the near term and a $700 million total revenue decrease to around $5 billion is a possibility, Moody's said.

Downturn in the marine market

"The downgrade reflects our view that the downturn in the marine market will continue into the foreseeable future, and is worse than our previous expectations, as consumer spending continues to deteriorate due to the ongoing credit market and housing market crises as well as high energy and food costs," Kevin Cassidy, senior credit officer, said in a statement.

Brunswick's commercial paper rating was downgraded to Prime-3 from Prime-2. The outlook is "Negative."Among Brunswick's boat brands are Bayliner, Cabo Yachts, Boston Whaler, Valiant, Sea Ray and Hatteras.Shares fell 32 cents, or 3.2 percent, to $9.68 in morning trading. Bayliner Cuts at Mfg. Plants

Bayliner Marine’s parent company, the Brunswick Corp., cut 68 positions recently from the Wilbur boat manufacturing plant as part of a company wide effort to reduce $300 million from annual expenses. In addition to the layoffs, Bayliner Marine has stopped work on its production lines until July 28.

Bayliner Marine’s head count was about 240 before the layoffs. Brunswick spokesman Dan Kubera said the company laid off about 1,000 hourly and salary workers from its boat and inboard and outboard motor plants nationwide.

Boat retail business has been on a rapid decline

Since 2005, the power boat retail business has been on a rapid decline, Kubera said. Power boat sales for 2007 in the U.S. were at their lowest numbers for the past 40 years recorded, according to a written statement from Brunswick.

“The U.S. marine industry is under a lot of pressure,” Kubera said by telephone from his Lake Forest, Ill., office, noting the combination of rising energy and food prices and the continuing turmoil in the housing market. “Anything that costs a pretty good chunk . . . consumers are being cautious.”

More Bayliner plant closings to come

Brunswick also stated that the company plans to announce four plant closures in addition to eight already announced to have fewer boat plants operating by 2009. Brunswick had 29 boat plants operating in 2007.

WATERFORD -- Less gasoline, more elbow grease. Less hot rodding, more chilling. Goodbye New York City, hello Castleton.

High gas prices are putting a new twist on the fun for many boaters this summer

But it's too soon to tell whether they'll be keeping some folks off the water entirely, state canal watchers say. Through mid-June, the state's 524-mile canal system saw a 14 percent drop in the number of recreational boats traveling through its locks, said state Canal Corp. Director Carmella Mantello.

But while Mantello said she's quite sure that high fuel prices played a role in that drop, she noted that several weekends were rainy and the weather was often unpredictable. And at the same time, commercial traffic has been up sharply in the first few weeks of the season.

Having an impact, especially for weekend boaters

"There's no doubt in our minds that it is having an impact, especially for weekend boaters," Mantello said of the high fuel prices, "but it's still early. I'm not waving the white flag yet."
At Lock 2 in Waterford, Chief Lock Operator Frank Jones said lockings actually have been up slightly on most weekends, with exceptions when the weather was stormy or exceptionally hot.

Jones, who has spent 31 years working on the canal, said the main difference he sees is in how boaters are behaving and where they are choosing to cruise. In addition to what he sees himself, he said, he hears a lot about plans for the season when boaters come in for their permits.

"They're staying local," Jones said. "They're using the canal instead of going up to Lake George. They're not pulling their boats up the Northway." And while they're here, Jones and lock operator Rick Pucci said, boaters are taking things easier and saving the additional fuel they'd burn if they were going faster.

"They're not going nuts. They're not water skiiing and pulling tubes," said Jones.

The Waterford Wall, where boats can tie up for the night, is busier than ever, Pucci said, and Jones said others are heading to shallow areas and sandy beaches on the Champlain Canal to swim. Greg Schwartz, vice commodore of the Troy Motor Boat and Canoe Club in Lansingburgh, said he and his wife, Sue, have pared back their boating plans a lot because of gas prices.

Last year, while fuel was still $2.75 a gallon or less, Schwartz and a few friends planned a sightseeing journey to New York City this summer. Now, that's off. "It's become cost-prohibitive," Schwartz said. "I didn't want to take out a home equity loan to go on my vacation."

Instead, the Schwartzes will take their 31-foot Bayliner out on shorter weekend excursions, visiting neighboring boat clubs in Castleton, Coxsackie and other closer towns. They're also teaming up with other couples and sharing one boat instead of taking two.

Call it boat pooling

High gas prices also may be steering more vacationers to boats without motors, like canoes and kayaks, and to biking and hiking trails. "We are seeing good things happen on land," Mantello said. "We expect tons of people to cycle the Erie."

More than 500 people have signed up for the 400-mile Cycling the Erie Canal bike tour from July 6-13, and museum operators and festival organizers along the waterway are reporting strong interest, she said.

Meanwhile, throughout the state, "there's a huge interest in nonmotorized boats," said Ro Woodard, a boating education specialist with the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. "The kayaks are hot stuff."

Mercury Marine was the only marine engine company to receive three “Best Buy” designations from Consumer Digest this week when the publication announced its top picks.

Mercury winners included the Verado 175 hp in the 150-199 hp category, the 15 hp Bigfoot in the Below 50 hp models and the 75 hp OptiMax in the 75-99 hp division.

The 75 hp weighs only 375 pounds and comes with a three-year warranty. It’s a direct injected three-cylinder with 1,562 cc of displacement.

Mercury’s 15 hp BigFoot offers surprisingly powerful punch due to an extended lower section, a large anti-ventilation plate and an over-sized, high-thrust propeller. Gear size and ratio are boosted, so the engine can turn the larger prop at proper rpm levels. That makes it particularly effective at pushing boats that are heavier and larger than a 15-hp engine typically can handle, such as pontoon boats or skiffs up to 18 feet in length.

The 15 hp Bigfoot is a two-cylinder FourStroke with 323 cc of displacement. It weighs just 128 pounds and comes with a three-year warranty.

Consumer Digest says it chooses not to highlight premium, midrange and economy selections because of the limited size and price range of the outboard-engine market for each of six groups based on hp. The groups follow National Marine Manufacturers Association statistics – below-50 hp, 50-74 hp, 75-99 hp, 100-149 hp, 150-199 hp, and 200 hp and up.

“Best Buy” outboard engines were selected based on design, efficiency, performance and price. In all cases, the number in the model name reflects the amount of hp for each engine.

McCoy, Brunswick’s chairman and chief executive officer. "In addition, we have addressed the prolonged downturn in the U.S. marine market by continually reducing production rates throughout our marine businesses, divesting under-utilized assets, exiting or divesting certain businesses, eliminating discretionary spending and reducing headcount. While these efforts have resulted in significant savings, the realities of the current U.S. marine market have caused us to step up the pace and magnitude of these efforts."

"Retail unit sales of power boats in the United States have been in decline since late 2005; however, the rate of decline has been accelerating," McCoy added. "Industry retail unit sales were down 13 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007 and down 21 percent in the first quarter of 2008 compared with the respective year-ago quarters. Further, these reductions were recorded off of an already low base. Total unit sales of power boats in the United States in 2007 were at their lowest in more than 40 years."

"An uncertain economy, high fuel and food prices, slumping home sales and values, rising unemployment and other factors continue to erode U.S. consumers’ confidence and are reducing their ability and desire to purchase discretionary items such as boats, and billiards tables and fitness equipment for their homes," McCoy explained. "For our planning purposes, we are not assuming that these pressures will abate any time soon. As a result, we are planning for an environment in which the U.S. marine market will be smaller in the near term, and we will resize our company accordingly. Our objective is to thrive and prosper while the U.S. marine market remains under pressure and to outperform when we see a rebound in demand."

Cost Savings Efforts

Brunswick stated that its $300 million cost savings target will be achieved in part by further shrinking its North American manufacturing footprint. The company plans to have 17 or fewer boat plants by the end of 2009, compared with the 29 it had in 2007. This will require the closure of four plants in addition to eight plant closures already completed or announced. Brunswick will also continue its efforts to reduce the complexity of its operations, including reducing the number of models and option packages, focusing on those that are popular and clearly resonate with consumers. The company’s efforts also entail assessing the outlook for continued participation in certain market segments across its operations that may not offer opportunities to generate acceptable levels of profitability.

The company said it will further reduce costs by implementing a new matrix operating model that will more efficiently provide common support functions and administrative services across all Brunswick business units, lowering spending in all functional and operations activities, and reducing its work force.

Going Forward

"These obviously are hard decisions, dictated by a difficult economy that has both constricted and altered the U.S. marine market," McCoy said. "We have chosen to act now to recast and resize our operations with the objective of being profitable within a smaller marine market. We are confident that these targeted savings and other changes are realistic and achievable, as well as necessary, to create a leaner organization that will be able to both prosper within these market conditions, as well as take advantage of any uptick in demand."

"Our immediate focus remains on managing pipeline inventories at our marine dealers, as well as enhancing our solid liquidity at Brunswick," McCoy said. "We will continue to produce at rates below retail demand to lower pipeline inventories. A reduction in production rates also results, unfortunately, in the need for fewer workers." The company said that it had notified employees today that it would be reducing its hourly and salaried work force at certain of its marine plants by 1,000. Further work force reductions of approximately 1,000 hourly and 700 salaried employees across the company’s marine business units and staff functions are contemplated as additional plant closures and consolidations and other cost-cutting measures are completed.

"Maintaining liquidity will continue to be a key priority in these uncertain times," McCoy added. "We are focusing on generating cash through good working capital management, paring inventories and discretionary spending. Our balance sheet is solid, and we expect to generate positive cash flow benefits in 2008 by further reducing capital spending and from positive contributions from changes in working capital."

OCEANSIDE — As coffee-lovers flock to the mainstream java houses located throughout the city, boat owners and locals alike frequent the Nautical Bean, a coffee shop tucked away in Oceanside Harbor among vessels, restaurants and small shops.

Known for its specialty brews, homemade whipped cream and mochas, clients receive more than just an ordinary cup of joe here.

“We don’t sell Chevys or Volkswagens here, OK?” explained Capt. John Alvarez, owner of the Nautical Bean. “We sell Ferraris, Bentleys and, once in a while, a Beemer.”

The shop serves eight coffees on a daily basis: Jamaican Blue Mountain, Kona Extra Fancy Greenwall Estate, Masters Blend, Nightwatch and African, Central American and decaffeinated blends.

Boaters get a quick Java Pick-me-Up

For deckhands coming in from a long trip, recreational boaters preparing for a relaxing sail or harbor area customers searching for a quick pick-me-up, the java hut offers something for everyone.

“I enjoy the panoramic view and the sense of excitement from the harbor,” said Bob Whelan, a customer who has been ordering coffee from the Nautical Bean for 10 years.
Those who aren’t taken by coffee can order sodas, teas, juices, bottled water and smoothies. Sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches and pastries are also available.

As a coffee aficionado, Alvarez, 59, understands the importance of a caffeine fix from his long days as a deckhand and a captain of sportfishing boats in the harbor.
Looking back to how he made it to where he is now, Alvarez said it was “a series of misfortune, bad timing and poor dumb luck. Because if I would have planned this out, I would have utterly failed.”

Luck, mixed with hard work and determination, also added to his current success.
In junior college, Alvarez was determined to make his way as a deckhand on one of the many boats docked in the harbor. He took a job as a dishwasher at the Dolphin Inn — and as he worked, he’d admire the free-spirited captains of the sportfishing boats who would saunter in for a cup of coffee.

“They would have their hip boots on, were tanned and had sunglasses and wore hats and gray shirts, and I thought ‘man that was so cool,’” he remembered.
As an employee, he was able to join in the trips and fish for free, allowing him to meet captains and learn his way around a sportfishing boat. Eventually he was asked to come aboard a 65-foot vessel and work as a deckhand.

A year later, a mentor and friend asked Alvarez to join him at H&M Landing in San Diego, where management sent him to navigation school. There, he earned his captains license. The years following his departure from the company, a decision he made when he realized his children Jodi and John almost didn’t recognize him after long trips at sea, are filled with self-owned businesses — ranging from Sun Graphics, a silk screening company to Standing Ovation, a singing telegram service.

In 1994, luck struck again when a buddy mentioned his ambition to open a coffee shop. Alvarez quickly jumped on board, attending an annual coffee show that happened to pull into town that month. The building that once housed a surf shop in the harbor was also empty and looking for a new tenant. “I was pumped,” Alvarez admitted.

In 1994 he opened the business, without his friend, and began to make his name known in the harbor by offering first-class brews and entertainment. “John’s concerts are the best,” gushed Linda Whelan. “They are just great.”

The Nautical Bean - There for Summer Concert Series

Together Linda and Bob Whelan have frequented the Nautical Bean, where they regularly grab a cup of coffee, read the daily paper, absorb the views and take in a summer night concert. Many boaters like the Whelans, who recently sold the 20-foot Bayliner they kept in the harbor for several years, cruise out to the shop to enjoy the music series.

“They dock, and they take their dinghies and skiffs and watch the concert,” Alvarez explained. “We call it ‘Humphreys North,” a mini-Humphreys by the Sea.” A stage is located in the patio area of the store, which overlooks the harbor — a perfect situation for boaters who can tie up to the docks and watch the shows on land.
While he is not on site everyday — his employees consist of a family that is beloved by many in the harbor — as a liveaboard, he is always nearby.

In 1996, he purchased a 26-foot Islander Bahama sailboat from a customer for $1,000 — and on a whim, Alvarez decided to move from his “bachelor pad” in Carlsbad when the harbor upped its liveaboard number from 45 to 90. “I had to really regroup,” he said as he made the transition to the 26-foot boat. “But I loved it.”

As time progressed, he traded up to a 69-foot sailboat — and moved from Marina South to Marina North. There, he noticed a houseboat that he just had to have. Berk Eastman, known for his Cape Codder houseboat design, agreed to build a 29- by 11-foot houseboat for Alvarez.

Equipped with fishing portal, hardwood floors, a patio and an office, Alvarez could never imagine leaving the harbor. “Here I am, living the life — and to this very day, I have to pinch myself,” Alvarez said. “There are 40 million guys going to work, driving an hour to go to their cubicle where they fire up their computers and look at the screensaver of the Bahamas or a boat — and they’re going ‘man, one day I’m going to do that.’ And I’m doing it,” he said. “If I would have planned this I would have blown it.” Thanks to Ambrosia Sarabia, http://www.thelog.com for this.

Charter Boat Captains

Charter boat captains are leaning toward lake perch instead of speeding to the hot-spot fishing holes. Marina owners are suffering from vacant slips and a slow-down in new boat sales.

Spring Lake Township residents Mel and Dorothy Miller are easing into retirement. Their long-term dreams included extended boat trips on their 32-foot Bayliner Motoryacht. They took a three-week cruise to Frankfort last year when diesel gas was $2.89 a gallon. That trip cost them $650 in fuel.

"Gas prices were higher than we would have liked then, but we just lolligagged along and had a wonderful time not worrying about the gas prices," Dorothy said. "This year, our dream was really kind of squelched. We had that wonderful outing last summer and it can't happen this year because of fuel prices."

Diesel gas at area marinas averaged $5 per gallon in recent days. The Millers' boat, Miller Mates, holds 200 gallons. "That's $1,000 just to gas up," Dorothy said. "It certainly is digging into our budget. It's not only gas prices but it's paying for a slip, maintenance on the boat and paying for many other things. It's basically become a second home on the water that may or may not move much this summer."

Rising Fuel Costs escalates food prices as well

Dorothy said it's not only fuel prices that frustrate her, but the rising cost of food that hits main street consumers. "It's affecting everyone's lives in such a dire way," she said. "It's affecting grocery prices and people's ability to afford to get to work. I think it's just a sin what's going on here.

Whitney Boat Charters - Grand Isle Marina

Matt Whitney, a 35-year veteran fisherman who owns Grand Isle Marina-based Whitney Charters, said business is down — mostly due to high fuel costs. "We definitely feel it," said Whitney, who averages a $160 to $165 fuel expenditure for a six-hour charter fishing outing. "It's having a huge impact on us cost-wise. We can't run as far anymore — not and stay in business anyway."

In prior years, a typical trip out to where the fish were biting took about 20 minutes to half an hour. Whitney said he can't afford to run his 34-foot vessel at such fast speeds anymore. Getting to the typical fishing spots can now take an hour and a half.

Less Fisherman on the lake

"The other thing we're noticing is a lot less recreational fishermen on the lake," he said. "It's not uncommon this year to only see one or two other boats. There used to be a lot more eyes looking for the fish. It's definitely presenting some challenges."
Whitney said he was forced to hike his $420 fishing trip price last year to $450 this season.

"And that doesn't even touch fuel costs," the charter boat captain said. "Business is down, phone calls are down, and fuel and the economy are a huge part of that. It's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel at this point." Boats are unlike automobiles. If a car gets 30 miles per gallon on the highway, it's much less influenced by weather conditions or how many passengers are onboard.

Boat Vessel Efficiency

Boats deal with wind and wave conditions. Vessel efficiency is gauged on gallons burned per hour. There's much more friction and resistance pushing a hull through water than there is rolling properly inflated tires down smooth asphalt. Gallons per hour are much more difficult to define. Each trip is different.

Lou Draeger of Spring Lake pilots a 37-foot Sea Ray through Tri-Cities waters. Draeger said he and his wife, Gloria, are planning a trip this summer from their Grand Isle slip to South Haven, and then across the lake to Chicago. Draeger said he's picked up fuel-saving tips from boating magazines.

"The thing we started to do a couple of years ago that we still do is only fill the boat with the fuel we need for that day," said Draeger, whose vessel holds 450 gallons. "And the boating magazines say to take everything off the boat that you don't need. It's amazing how much stuff you can accumulate onboard that you really don't use."

Wharf Marina

Wharf Marina General Manager C.J. Fischer said he's seen no decline in boaters at the pump, but he has witnessed a stronger preference in used boat sales over new boats.
"Used boats are really a hot item right now," Fischer said. Fischer said his marina is selling a lot of fuel.

"People around here love the water and have a huge passion for boating," he said. "We're surrounded by water and people have a huge passion for it. They know by owning a boat they're going to have to spend the money on the gas. They just do it. To them, spending six to seven hours on the water floating or boating is worth it."

Dave Richards, a Rockford resident who has moored his 25-foot Bayliner in the Tri-Cities for more than a decade, purchased a larger boat several weeks ago in Port Clinton, Ohio. He had hoped to motor the 1985 32-foot Bayliner around Michigan's Thumb, with a moorage stop at Mackinac Island and other ports before christening the boat in Grand Haven with his nine grandchildren.

Diesel fuel cost and lack of spare parts

Diesel fuel cost and lack of spare parts halted his lifelong dream to travel around the Lower Peninsula — he said he couldn't afford both. "The $5.25 per gallon at marinas on the lake changed our plans for the whole trip," said Richards, who moors at Rycenga Marina. "It's the talk at all the marinas. People are more or less just hanging out at the docks.

"There are many restaurants that depend on seasonal boaters — not just here but in Pentwater, Saugatuck, South Haven and other ports," he added. "They won't realize that extra business this year."

Vacant Boat Slips - more than ever before

Richards said he's noticed more vacant slips than ever before. "And there are still boats up on blocks that haven't been moved because people are trying to sell or can't afford to do anything with them," he said. "We used to take a boat trip every other week, but we won't be doing that this year." Thanks to MARIE HAVENGA,

United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22-04 kicked off National Safe Boating Week by simulating boating rescue scenarios for the Operation American Lifesaver event at the Smithtown Marina recently.

Boat safety check demonstration

The day was highlighted by simulation critiques and group discussions among local fire firefighters, a kayak and 20-foot Bayliner boat safety check demonstration, and an appearance by state Senator John Flanagan (R-East Northport), who embraced the efforts of all local emergency services who attended. "I have a lot of respect for the work these folks do," Flanagan said. "A critical component is public awareness … making sure that people are safe."

The event was attended by the Nissequogue, Setauket, Smithtown and St. James fire departments, which in turn participated in recreating rescue scenarios. The first of these replicated the proper safety procedures for evacuating heart-attack victims from a passenger boat in the marina and resuscitating him. Volunteer victims were carefully removed from the boat and taken on a gurney to waiting ambulances. Other practice scenarios included a drug overdose patient and a boater suffering a severe asthma attack.

Focus on PFDs, personal flotation devices

The central focus of the event was PFDs, or personal flotation devices, and their importance for all boaters. According the United States Coast Guard, more than two-thirds of boating fatalities result in drowning and 90 percent of those who drown did not wear a PFD. This correlation has prompted a straightforward slogan for the 2008 boating season, "Wear it!"

"Wearing a personal flotation device provides those who accidentally end up in the water with the added protection they need," Flanagan stated in a release, "and everyone should have one on every time they go out on the waters."

Long Island, New York - World-renowned for recreational boating

"Long Island is world-renowned for recreational boating," he continued, "and it is up to all of us to do our part to make it as safe and enjoyable as possible."

"Our experience shows us that nothing makes more difference when it comes to saving lives than wearing a life jacket and boating education," said Flotilla 22-04 Commander Ron Doda. "That is why the auxiliary is involved in ongoing campaigns to promote both." Flanagan has successfully worked to strengthen New York State's boating-while-intoxicated (BWI) laws.

In 2003, Flanagan's efforts lowered the BWI blood alcohol content threshold from .10 to .08 and followed that in 2006 by increasing the penalties for those convicted of BWI. These changes made the crime of BWI equal in the eyes of the law with driving while intoxicated.

Promote Boating Safety

To further promote boating safety, Flanagan has sponsored legislation that would require all who operate a powered vessel on the waters to hold a boating safety certificate. The legislation also forbids operation of such a boat or watercraft by those 10 or under and restricts the ability of those who are under 16 to drive on the water. Edson Program Awards $200,000. to young entrepreneurs

Sixteen fledgling businesses operated by Arizona State University students have received a total of $200,000 in grants from the Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative to help them become established. The student-owned enterprises will receive between $2,000 and $20,000 each in seed capital and will be provided office space at SkySong, ASU’s innovation center at McDowell and Scottsdale roads in Scottsdale.

Nearly 150 student entrepreneurs applied for funding this year. Winners were chosen based on an initial application process and a live presentation to a panel of seven judges.

“The presentations and business plans from the top groups were quite impressive,” said Dan Clarke, president of Specialty Retail Shops, an e-commerce company, who was one of the seven judges.

The winning ventures ranged from an online cheerleading community to a shop that manufactures high-performance skateboard components.

Edson Program by Orin Edson, founder of Bayliner Boats

The Edson program was created four years ago from a $5.4 million endowment presented to the university by Orin Edson, founder of Bayliner boats, who wanted to encourage student entrepreneurs.

The program doesn’t provide class credit, and all businesses are run in the student’s free time.
Several ventures that received funding in the past have continued in business after the students left the university, said Terree Wasley, director of innovation and entrepreneurship at SkySong.

Edson Program Success Stories

“One of our second-year companies has moved into their own commercial space and hired employees,” she said. “Another nonprofit leases its own space. Clinton and Perry Lakes, Kansas - gas prices nearing $4.00 a gallon

Officials at Clinton and Perry lakes reported typically busy Memorial Day boating and camping traffic this weekend. But with gasoline nearing $4 per gallon, several holiday boaters and campers said higher pump prices were still on their minds. Sherry Reed, James Brewton and their friends pooled their money to put gas in Brewton’s 1998 Bayliner to spend Monday afternoon on Clinton Lake. They spent $70 total to fill up the tank before they left Lawrence.

Gas, an Issue now for boaters

“We used to be able to say, ‘Hey, let’s go boating,’ and now we have to make sure we have enough people to cover the gas money,” Reed said. She said the afternoon sunshine made Monday look more like a typical Memorial Day at the lake, compared with a gray and cloudy morning earlier, because more boaters hit the water. Park rangers said campsites at Clinton and Perry lakes were full for the weekend. Last year, high waters forced them to close some flooded camps and beaches.

Boat Traffic during long weekend

Officials at Clinton Lake said traditionally 40,000 to 50,000 people spend some time on the federal land every Memorial Day weekend. “I would say it would probably be within that mark,” said Jon Carlisle, a park ranger at Clinton Lake with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At both lakes, boating traffic seemed to be off-and-on at certain times, but they suspected it was due to the storms that moved in throughout the weekend. “I think we probably had more effect from weather than we did fuel prices,” said Kenneth Wade, operations project manager at Perry Lake with the Corps of Engineers.

Spending only one tank of gas

Carlisle, at Clinton Lake, said higher fuel prices might not hit the two area lakes as hard during summer holidays because they serve a local population in northeastern Kansas and the Kansas City area. Matt Jones, who owns a Tonganoxie plumbing company, spent the weekend with family from the area camping at Clinton State Park. It makes for a good family atmosphere, and the campground was full most of the weekend, he said. But they also decided ahead of time to use only one tank of gas in their boat the entire weekend. They still had fuel to go back on the water Monday afternoon, but for the first time the thought was there, he said.

Clinton Marina, Kansas, drop in boat traffic

Megan Hiebert, president of the Clinton Marina, said she had not noticed a drop in boating traffic in the lake. “If it hits 5, 6 or 7 (dollars), but again, we were saying the same thing when it hit 3 and 4,” she said. Some boaters Monday said they made small changes to try to consume less fuel, but at the same time they still wanted to find a way to have fun on Memorial Day weekend. “Somehow, we’ll work a little harder, make a little more money to afford our favorite thing to do,” said Jim Fender, of Lawrence. Korea International Boat Show

There is still time to take advantage of the support – both financial and marketing – offered to exhibitors by organizers of the first Korea International Boat Show in June and get your brand to the many hundreds of thousands of people expected to attend.

CEO of AIMEX, Mary-Anne Edwards, says the organization will head up a 14-strong Australian group. Austrade too will have a presence there and host an information event to promote Australian industry. The rest is arranged for you.'

Trade Mission to Korea for boating industry

The Queensland government is organizing a trade mission to Korea for interested companies to inspect infrastructure throughout the Gyeonggi Province and observe the Korea Boat Show. Trade Queensland in Brisbane is supported by an office in Seoul and can arrange a company profile in Korean, interpreter services and cultural assistance for interested businesses. It will also assist with TV interviews, seminars and business meetings.

Global interest in the Korea International Boat Show has exceeded the expectations of Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-So, who has been traveling the world actively promoting the show and the development of the marine industry. Gyeonggi, is home to Samsung, LG Philips and Hyundai-Kia Motors, and is benefiting from millions of dollars in government money invested in marine infrastructure.

Korea International Boat Show already signed up 231 exhibitors

According to show director Choi Hyung Gun, the show has already signed up 231 exhibitors for the event including 121 overseas companies from a total of 21 countries and 110 domestic exhibitors from Korea.

Bayliner among leading brands at Korea International Boat Show

Leading brands exhibiting include Azimut, Bavaria Yachts, Bayliner, Beneteau, Fairline, Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Riviera and Sunseeker.

'We are very pleased with the response to the show, which indicates the strength of interest in the developing boating market in Korea,' says Choi Hyung Gun. 'We have had good support from overseas marine trade associations who are exhibiting, including AIMEX Group and Queensland State from Australia, British Marine Federation, FIN from France and UCINA from Italy.'

The Korea International Boat Show is owned by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government and managed by KOTRA, a government-owned trade promotion agency. The show opens with a VIP and press day on June 10 and concludes 15 June. The venue is Jeongok Marina, a marina being developed by Gyeonggi Province on the west coast, south of Inchon Airport.

South Korea potential growth for boating industry

South Korea is one of the most affluent countries in Asia, with much potential to grow as a leisure boating market. The country is now number 13 in the world ranking for gross domestic product with GDP per head at US$24,000. With the rise in the economy and more leisure time with a five day working week, boating has become a much more attractive activity.

The Governor stresses that the population of the region, affluent, educated and increasingly interested in the outdoor lifestyle, numbers around 11 million, which is a huge catchment area for the launch of the Korea Boat Show. In fact there are around 24 million people within 150km of the venue. Boat Show organizers anticipate around 40,000 visitors to the four day event, which coincides with the Korea Match Cup yachting tournament.

North Korea coastline now available for boating

Reduction in tension between North Korea has meant that much of the coastline is now available for boating. Rules and regulations for the use of a leisure boat are also very transparent, giving a green light for the development of boating. This is in distinct contrast to some other Asian countries such as China where the development of boating is being held back by outdated rules and regulations geared to commercial shipping.

Development in marinas is also being actively promoted by the Provincial Governments in Korea. Currently three marinas exist in Korea with at least 12 other projects actively under way, including four in Gyeonggi Province that are being directly funded by the province and will be completed over the next four years with a total of 1,000 berths.

Leisure Boats numbers over 5,000

The current number of leisure boats, excluding dinghies, is 5,000, which puts the market size similar to Hong Kong and Singapore in terms of total boats. However, with a much larger population of 46 million people and an extensive coastline, South Korea has excellent potential for growth to become one of the key leisure boating markets in Asia.

Gyeonggi Province is also ideally placed to grow a manufacturing cluster with a skilled and efficient workforce and a strong manufacturing culture that receives government support for foreign direct investment.

Bayliner Boats - Brunswick stops Bluewater Boats Production

Bluewater Marine brands includes

– including Sea Pro, Sea Boss, Palmetto and Laguna – with the up coming 2009 model year, which commences July 1, the company said in a press release yesterday. As a result of this action, Brunswick will close its production facility in Newberry, S.C., by the end of June.

The boat lines were some of Brunswick’s most recent additions to the U.S. market. The company acquired Sea Pro, Sea Boss and Palmetto in early 2005 and launched the Laguna brand in mid-2006.

U.S. Boat Industry slowdown since 2005

“The U.S. marine industry has been in a prolonged slowdown since late 2005, driven by an uncertain economy, high fuel prices, the housing slump and other economic factors that have affected consumers’ confidence and eroded their discretionary spending,” said Dustan E. McCoy, Brunswick chairman and chief executive officer, reiterating reasons Brunswick gave for job reductions at its Albemarle plant, which were announced earlier this month.

“As a result, we are assessing the recovery potential for all marine segments in which we participate, their fragmented nature, the costs of our continued presence in certain of them, and the position of our brands,” McCoy continued. “Our work is ongoing and is focused on developing profitable brand positioning in all segments. With this action, we believe we will solidify our presence in the highly fragmented saltwater segment by concentrating our efforts and leveraging our resources on such brands as Boston Whaler, Triton, Trophy, and our sportfishing offerings from Hatteras, Cabo and Albemarle, while sharpening our market focus and providing necessary cost reductions.”

Brunswick Newberry Facility Closing

Brunswick plans to cease production at the Newberry facility by the end of June 2008. Approximately 175 positions will be affected. Qualifying employees will receive assistance aimed at helping them transition to other employment.

“This market-driven action should not be viewed as a reflection on the performance of our employees,” McCoy said. “As always, we will work hard with all affected – employees, dealers, suppliers, communities and consumers – to minimize the disruption that this decision may cause.”

As a result of these actions, the company said it will record a pretax charge of approximately $25 million to $30 million in the 2008 second quarter to cover asset write-downs and other costs associated with the plant closure. Of that total, approximately 75 percent of the charge is non-cash and the remainder is cash. The company estimates it will realize annualized pretax savings of approximately $9 million stemming from this decision.

Bayliner Boats - Boating deaths fell in 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Deaths resulting from recreational boating accidents fell in 2007, according to figures just announced by the United States Coast Guard’s Boating Safety Division, the Coast Guard Auxiliary reported in a statement today.

Coast Guard’s Boating Safety Division

The count dropped from 710 in 2006 to 688 in 2007, the lowest figure since 2004 and third lowest since the Coast Guard began collecting statistics specifically related to recreational boating.

"It's gratifying to see the number of deaths going down," commented Rear Admiral James Watson, Director of Prevention Policy. "We hope that this is a result of more boaters adopting responsible boating behaviors, such as making sure that everyone on board is wearing properly-fitting Coast Guard-approved life jackets at all times."

Recreational Boating Accidents

The Coast Guard Boating Safety Division also released figures that revealed while fatalities decreased, other measures – including injuries, number of accidents, and property damage – rose significantly. Injuries rose from 3,474 in 2006 to 3,686 in 2007. Reported recreational boating accidents, which reached 4,967 in 2006, climbed to 5,223. Property damage, which was a record $43,670,424 in 2006, rose further to $53,288,858 last year.

Top causes for all accidents revealed by 2007 statistics remain fairly consistent with previous years, according to the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Operator inattention, careless/reckless operation, passenger/skier behavior, excessive speed, and alcohol use rank as the top five contributing factors. Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 21 percent of the deaths, the organization reported.

Boating Safety Instruction

Where instruction data was submitted, three fourths of the deaths occurred on boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction. Over two-thirds of those killed in boating accidents drowned, and of those, 90 percent were not wearing life jackets.
